Each row is the live international price of 1 gram of pure gold in that currency. The Indian figure here has no import duty added; see the India page for the duty-inclusive rate. International parity: the live world gold price converted at the current exchange rate, scaled by weight and purity. It excludes local dealer premiums, taxes and making charges. How we calculate
One world price, many local prices
Gold trades globally in US dollars per troy ounce, with London, New York (COMEX futures) and Shanghai as the main centres. That single spot price is the starting point everywhere. What a buyer pays in Mumbai, Istanbul or Ho Chi Minh City then depends on five things:
- Exchange rate. When a currency weakens against the dollar, the local gold price rises even if the dollar price is flat. This is why gold in Turkish lira or Egyptian pounds has climbed far faster over the years than gold in dollars.
- Import duties and controls. India adds 6% customs duty to imported gold. Some countries limit who may import or produce bars, which can push local prices above world parity.
- Sales taxes. VAT, GST or consumption tax may apply to jewellery, to bullion, or to both. Many jurisdictions exempt investment-grade bars and coins.
- Local premiums and discounts. Dealers price in transport, insurance, refining and their margin. In markets with strong demand and limited supply, such as Vietnam's SJC bars, the premium can be large; when local demand is weak, gold can trade at a discount to London.
- Units and purities. The same gold is quoted per gram, per tola, per tael, per Thai baht weight or per troy ounce, in 24K, 22K, 21K or 18K. A price that looks higher may simply be for a heavier unit or a purer metal.
Our tables strip out the local layers and show parity: the world price converted at the live exchange rate. Comparing a shop quote against parity tells you how much premium, tax and margin you are paying. Our guide on how the gold price is determined covers the global side in more detail.

Using these numbers
To compare two countries fairly, convert both quotes to the same unit and purity first, then subtract taxes you would not pay as a visitor or would reclaim. A Dubai 22K price per gram and an Indian 22K price per 10 grams only become comparable once both are on a per-gram, pre-tax basis. Jewellery adds making charges that vary far more between shops than the gold price does between countries, so the metal rate alone rarely decides where gold is cheapest. Our guide on why gold rates differ by city explains the same effect inside one country.
