How Malaysian gold prices are formed

The ringgit price of gold is the US dollar spot price multiplied by the USD/MYR exchange rate, then divided by 31.1035 to get a per-gram figure. Wholesalers and goldsmith chains publish a daily selling price and a buy-back price for each purity, usually revised during the day when the world market moves. Because the ringgit itself moves, the local price can rise on a day when gold is flat in dollars, or hold steady while dollar gold falls.

Shop prices for 916 jewellery are not simply 91.6% of the 999 price. Goldsmiths quote a 916 rate that already includes some margin, and then add upah, the workmanship charge, either per gram or per piece. Intricate designs, hollow pieces and branded collections carry higher upah than plain chains.

Bullion and gold accounts

Malaysians who want gold as savings rather than ornament buy 999.9 bars and wafers, from 1 gram upward, from bullion companies and some jewellery chains. Bank Negara Malaysia's Kijang Emas bullion coin, available in 1 oz, ½ oz and ¼ oz sizes, has been sold and bought back through Maybank branches. Several banks also run gold investment accounts, where you buy gold by the gram without taking delivery; you hold a claim on the bank rather than metal in hand, and the bank sets its own buy and sell rates.

Where people buy

Kedai emas run by long-established family firms line the old commercial streets of Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Ipoh and Johor Bahru, and national chains operate in most shopping centres. Jalan Masjid India and the Petaling Street area in Kuala Lumpur are traditional places to compare 916 jewellery. Demand rises around Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, Deepavali and wedding seasons, when shops stock heavier 916 bangles and wedding sets, but the underlying gold price does not change because of local festivals; promotions on upah do.

Worked example (illustrative)

Suppose a goldsmith's 916 selling price is RM520 per gram and you buy a 15 g bangle with upah of RM25 per gram. A month later you sell it back at a 916 buy-back price of RM490 per gram:

ItemCalculationAmount
Gold value15 g × RM520RM7,800
Upah15 g × RM25RM375
Price paidRM8,175
Buy-back value15 g × RM490RM7,350
Cost of the round tripRM8,175 − RM7,350RM825

These numbers are examples only. The point is that upah is not returned on resale, and the buy-back rate sits below the selling rate, so the gold price has to rise by roughly 10% in this case before the bangle is worth what you paid.

Checklist

  • Check the purity stamp (916, 999, 750) and the shop's chop on the piece.
  • Ask for the gold weight and upah on the receipt as separate lines.
  • Ask the shop's buy-back rate for the same purity before buying; it differs between shops.
  • For bars, prefer well-known refiners with serial numbers and keep the original packaging.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 916 gold price in Malaysia today?
The live table shows the parity value of 916 (22K) gold per gram and per 10 grams in ringgit. Shop prices for 916 jewellery are higher, because the goldsmith's margin and upah are added.
What is upah in Malaysian gold shops?
Upah is the workmanship or making charge, quoted per gram or per piece. It is added to the gold value and is generally not refunded when you sell the piece back.
Why do kedai emas give a lower price when I sell?
Shops buy back below their selling price to cover refining, testing and margin. Some also deduct for wear or treat older pieces at a lower purity if the stamp is unclear.
Is 999 or 916 better for saving?
For saving, 999.9 bars or coins have the smallest premium over the gold content. 916 jewellery carries upah and a wider buy-sell gap, but it can be worn.
What is the Kijang Emas?
Kijang Emas is Malaysia's official gold bullion coin, issued by Bank Negara Malaysia in 999.9 gold in 1 oz, ½ oz and ¼ oz sizes.
