Jewellery price calculator (India)

Enter the per-gram rate quoted by your jeweller.

How to use the calculator

  1. Gold rate per gram: enter the rate for the purity you are buying. Use your jeweller's board rate, or enter the price from the live table above (for 22K jewellery use the 22K row).
  2. Net gold weight: the weight of gold only, excluding stones, beads or lac.
  3. Making charge: choose % of gold value, ₹ per gram or a flat amount, then enter the figure from the jeweller's quote.
  4. Stones / other charges: the price of diamonds, gems or any separately billed work.
  5. Hallmark (HUID) charge: charged per piece; ₹45 is pre-filled because it is a commonly quoted figure. If you are buying several pieces in one bill, enter the total (for example 3 pieces × ₹45 = ₹135).
  6. GST: 3% is pre-filled.

The formula

Gold value = rate × net weight
Making = gold value × % (or ₹ per gram × weight, or flat)
Taxable value = gold value + making + stones + hallmark
GST = taxable value × 3%
Total = taxable value + GST

GST on jewellery is charged on the whole invoice, making charge included, not just on the gold. The 5% rate applies only to job work, where you give your own gold to a goldsmith. See GST on gold.

Worked example

Suppose the 22K rate is ₹12,250 per gram (illustrative), and you buy a 15 g bangle with a 10% making charge, no stones and one HUID fee of ₹45.

ItemCalculationAmount
Gold value15 g × ₹12,250₹1,83,750.00
Making charge10% of ₹1,83,750₹18,375.00
Hallmark (HUID)1 piece₹45.00
Taxable value₹2,02,170.00
GST3% of ₹2,02,170₹6,065.10
Total₹2,08,235.10

Effective price: ₹2,08,235.10 ÷ 15 = ₹13,882.34 per gram, 13.3% above the gold value.

Interpreting the result

  • The % above gold value is the best single number for comparing shops. A lower board rate with a higher making charge can cost more.
  • Some jewellers quote wastage separately from making. Add both together as a percentage.
  • Making charges are not refunded when you sell or exchange; see making charges explained.
  • The live table is national; city board rates differ slightly. Check your city on the gold rate in India page.

Frequently asked questions

Is GST charged on the making charge?
Yes. For jewellery bought from a shop, 3% GST applies to the full invoice value, including gold, making, stones and hallmarking.
What is the HUID charge?
A small fee per piece for BIS hallmarking with a six-character HUID code. It applies to each item, so a set of several pieces carries several fees.
What is a typical making charge?
It varies widely by design and shop, from a few percent on plain chains and coins to 20% or more on intricate handwork. Get the figure in writing before billing.
Should I enter the 24K or 22K rate?
Enter the rate for the purity of the piece: 22K for most traditional jewellery, 18K for most diamond jewellery.
