How Lahore prices gold

Lahore does not set its own gold rate. Jewellers take the 24K rate announced by the sarafa trade in Karachi, derive 22K and 21K rates from it, and may add a small local margin. The table above shows what those rates would be at pure international parity, which lets you see how much premium the market is charging on a given day.

Lahore's gold bazaars

The traditional heart of the trade is Suha Bazaar inside the Walled City, a dense lane of goldsmiths and jewellers where much of Punjab's handmade jewellery has long been produced, alongside the older bazaars around Anarkali. Here gold is still talked about in tola and masha and prices are close to weight. Branded jewellers with fixed price lists are found in Liberty Market and along MM Alam Road in Gulberg, as well as in the city's large malls, where making charges tend to be higher but designs, certification and after-sales service are more standardised.

What Lahoris buy

  • Bridal sets in 21K and 22K: Punjabi weddings call for heavy necklaces, chooriyan (bangles), jhumkay and tikka, frequently with kundan or polki work.
  • Gifts for Eid and family occasions: lighter rings, bangles and small chains.
  • Bars and coins: 24K biscuits in tola weights, bought as savings by families who do not want to pay making charges.
  • 18K: used by branded stores for diamond pieces.

Worked example: selling old jewellery

Many Lahore families exchange older pieces for new designs before a wedding. Suppose (illustratively) the shop's 21K buying rate is PKR 382,500 per tola, you bring 3 tola of 21K jewellery, and the shop applies a 6% deduction.

Deductions differ between shops and are often lower when you exchange for new jewellery at the same shop than when you sell for cash. Pieces with stones are weighed net of the stones, so ask to see how the gold weight was arrived at. The guide to selling gold covers testing and negotiation.

Wedding season in Lahore

Demand in Lahore peaks in the winter wedding season, from roughly November to February, when families order bridal sets weeks ahead. Many book a design with an advance payment; ask whether the gold is priced at the rate on the day you order or on the day of delivery, since the difference over several weeks can be large. Some families buy 24K biscuits gradually through the year and hand them to the jeweller as raw material, paying only making charges for the finished set.

Checklist for Lahore buyers

  1. Note the day's 24K rate and the parity figure above before you go to the bazaar.
  2. Ask which karat the piece is, and whether the shop will put it on the bill.
  3. For kundan and polki pieces, ask for the gold weight separately from stones and lac.
  4. Compare making charges between a Walled City goldsmith and a branded store for the same weight.
  5. Agree the buy-back or exchange deduction at the time of purchase.
