Zakat on Gold Calculator

Live prices via TradingView · Page reviewed

Enter the price of 1 gram of 24K gold and the weight of the gold you own in each karat. The calculator converts everything to pure gold, compares it with the nisab (85 g by default) and, if you are at or above it, shows zakat due at 2.5%. Take the price from the live table above.

Zakat on gold calculator

Enter the gold price and your holdings.

How to use the calculator

  1. Enter the price of 1 gram of 24K gold in your currency, from the live table above or your local market rate.
  2. Enter the grams you own in each karat: 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K. Weigh only the gold; exclude stones.
  3. Leave the nisab at 85 g unless the scholar you follow uses a different figure.
  4. Read the result: your pure gold, its value, the value of the nisab and, if applicable, the zakat due.

If you hold gold in tola, convert first: 1 tola = 11.6638 g (the unit converter does this).

The rules the calculator applies

  • Nisab: the minimum amount of gold on which zakat becomes due, commonly cited as 85 g of pure gold. Older texts give it as 20 mithqal; modern equivalents vary slightly, which is why the field is editable.
  • Hawl: zakat is due once the gold has been held at or above nisab for one full lunar (Hijri) year, which is about 354 days.
  • Rate: 2.5% of the value of the gold.
  • Purity: lower karats count only for their gold content: 22K × 0.916, 21K × 0.875, 18K × 0.75.

The calculator looks at gold only. If you also hold cash, silver or trade goods, many scholars combine them and compare the total with a nisab, often the silver nisab (commonly cited as 595 g of silver), which is far lower in value. This tool does not do that combined calculation.

Worked example

Suppose 24K gold is PKR 37,000 per gram (illustrative). You own 10 g of 24K, 50 g of 22K and 40 g of 21K.

StepCalculationResult
Pure gold10 + (50 × 0.916) + (40 × 0.875) = 10 + 45.8 + 3590.8 g
Value90.8 × 37,000PKR 3,359,600
Nisab85 × 37,000PKR 3,145,000
Above nisab?90.8 g ≥ 85 gYes
Zakat due3,359,600 × 2.5%PKR 83,990

Zakat is calculated on the full value once the threshold is met, not just the part above 85 g.

Personal-use jewellery

Scholars differ on whether gold jewellery worn regularly for personal use is subject to zakat. The Hanafi school generally holds that it is; many scholars of the Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools hold that jewellery for normal personal use is exempt, while gold kept as savings or investment is not. This calculator does not decide that question. If you follow the view that personal jewellery is exempt, enter only the gold that is zakatable for you. Consult a qualified scholar for your situation.

Which price to use

The table shows international parity. Many people use the price at which gold could be sold in their local market on the day zakat is due, which in Pakistan, India or Bangladesh may be higher or lower than parity. Whichever you choose, use the 24K per-gram price; the calculator applies purity itself. Country rates: Pakistan, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia.

Frequently asked questions

What is the nisab for gold?
It is commonly cited as 85 grams of pure gold, about 7.29 tola. Some sources give slightly different metric equivalents, so the field can be edited.
How much zakat is due on gold?
2.5% of the value of all zakatable gold, once your holding has been at or above nisab for a lunar year.
Is zakat due on gold jewellery I wear?
Scholars differ. Some hold that all gold, including worn jewellery, is zakatable; others exempt jewellery for normal personal use. Ask a scholar you trust.
How do I count 22K or 21K gold toward nisab?
By its pure gold content: multiply 22K weight by 0.916 and 21K weight by 0.875. The calculator does this for you.
