Delhi quotes per 10 grams

In Delhi's bullion trade, the reference quote is rupees per 10 grams of 24K (999) gold, the same unit used by MCX futures. Jewellers then derive the 22K and 18K rates from it. When a shopkeeper in Chandni Chowk tells you "the rate today", ask whether it is for 24K or 22K and whether GST is included, because both conventions are heard.

The price itself is not set in Delhi. It is the international price converted to rupees, plus 6% customs duty and the bullion dealer's premium or discount. Delhi is not a major import port, so metal moves in from the import hubs, which can add a small transport and insurance cost.

The old city and the new markets

Chandni Chowk and Dariba Kalan

Dariba Kalan, a narrow lane off Chandni Chowk, has been a street of jewellers for centuries and is still lined with small shops selling gold and silver jewellery, along with traditional pieces such as heavy jadau and kundan work. Kinari Bazaar nearby supplies wedding trimmings. Wholesale bullion dealing is concentrated in the old city too, so many jewellers across the capital source metal here.

Karol Bagh and south Delhi

Karol Bagh has a dense cluster of jewellery showrooms and workshops, popular with families shopping for weddings. South Extension, Lajpat Nagar, Rajouri Garden and the malls host branches of national chains, with more 18K diamond jewellery and lightweight daily-wear designs. Gurugram, Noida and Faridabad shops follow broadly the same rate.

Worked example: Dhanteras coin and a pair of kadas

Illustrative rates: 24K at ₹13,380 per gram, 22K at ₹12,250 per gram.

A 10-gram 24K coin

30 grams of 22K kadas, making at ₹700 per gram

Making30 g × ₹700₹21,000

Total₹4,00,155

Per-gram making is common in north India because it does not rise automatically with the gold price, unlike a percentage. On a ₹12,250 rate, ₹700 per gram is about 5.7%. Try different quotes in the jewellery price calculator.

What Delhi buys, and when

Dhanteras is the single busiest gold day in Delhi; coins, small bars and utensils sell in large numbers, and queues outside Karol Bagh and Chandni Chowk shops are common. Karva Chauth gifts, Akshaya Tritiya, and the winter wedding season from November to February follow. Punjabi and north Indian bridal sets typically include a heavy necklace, maang tikka, jhumkas, a nath and kadas or bangles. Silver, rather than gold, is traditionally used for anklets and toe rings.

Tips for Delhi buyers

  • Old-city shops may quote the rate excluding GST and making; ask for an all-in figure per gram before comparing with a showroom.
  • Every piece must carry a BIS hallmark and HUID. If a shop offers "unhallmarked at a lower price", walk away. See hallmark and HUID.
  • Kundan and polki pieces contain lac and stones; insist on net gold weight. The making charges guide covers how such work is priced.
  • Bank-sold coins are convenient but banks generally will not buy them back. Jeweller coins can be exchanged at the same store.
  • Pay large amounts digitally; cash of ₹2 lakh or more per transaction is not permitted.
  • If you are booking a wedding set months ahead, ask whether the shop offers a rate-lock scheme and what happens to your advance if the rate falls instead.

Selling gold in Delhi

Old-city dealers buy gold for melting at a rate linked to the day's 24K price, after an XRF or touchstone test, while showrooms prefer exchange against new jewellery. Ask both for the deduction percentage, and do not accept a valuation without seeing the purity result. The scrap gold calculator gives a fair starting figure.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 24K gold rate per 10 grams in Delhi today?
The table at the top shows the live indicative 24K rate per 10 grams, including 6% import duty but before 3% GST. Delhi jewellers' board rates can be slightly higher or lower depending on their premium.
Is gold cheaper in Chandni Chowk than in showrooms?
Old-city jewellers sometimes charge lower making charges, but the gold rate itself is similar across Delhi. Compare the final price including making and GST, and check the hallmark.
Why is the Delhi gold rate sometimes higher than Mumbai's?
Mumbai is a major bullion import and trading hub; Delhi receives metal from there and other hubs, so a small transport and insurance cost can be added. The difference is usually small.
Which is better on Dhanteras: a gold coin or jewellery?
A 24K coin has low making charges and is easier to value later, so it suits saving. Jewellery costs more over the gold value because of making charges but is worn. Our Dhanteras guide compares both.
