Gold Price Today in Vietnam

Live prices via TradingView · Page reviewed

The live table converts the world gold price into Vietnamese dong per lượng (tael, 37.5 g), per chỉ (3.75 g) and per gram. Vietnam's domestic prices for SJC gold bars are set locally and have often traded well above this world-parity level, while plain 99.99% gold rings usually sit closer to it.

World gold (OANDA:XAUUSD) × USD/VND (FX_IDC:USDVND), scaled to each unit. This is world parity, not the SJC or jewellery-shop price, which can be considerably higher. How we calculate

Two prices: world parity and the domestic market

Most countries' gold prices stay within a few percent of the world price. Vietnam is a well-known exception. Gold is a traditional store of wealth for Vietnamese households, demand is large, and the import and production of gold bars has been tightly controlled by the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV). With supply restricted, domestic bar prices have repeatedly traded at a premium to world parity, at times of several million to well over ten million dong per lượng.

When the gap widens sharply, the SBV has intervened, for example by selling bars into the market or adjusting how they are distributed, which has narrowed the premium for periods. Because policy can change, treat the premium as a variable, not a constant: compare the quoted domestic price with the parity figure above on the day you buy.

SJC bars and other gold

SJC (Saigon Jewelry Company) bars are the national brand of gold bar, and quotes in the media usually refer to SJC buy and sell prices per lượng in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Alongside them, large jewellers such as PNJ, DOJI and Bảo Tín Minh Châu sell plain 99.99% rings (nhẫn trơn) and their own branded products. Rings are not subject to the same bar restrictions, so their price tends to follow the world market more closely, though dealers still add a margin and a buy-sell spread.

Units and terms

Domestic prices are often printed in thousand dong per chỉ or million dong per lượng, so check the unit before comparing two boards.

Worked example (illustrative)

Suppose world gold converts to ₫131,000,000 per lượng and SJC bars are offered at ₫145,000,000 per lượng:

ItemCalculationAmount
World parity, 1 lượngfrom the live table₫131,000,000
SJC selling price, 1 lượngdealer board₫145,000,000
Domestic premium₫145,000,000 − ₫131,000,000₫14,000,000
Premium in percent₫14,000,000 ÷ ₫131,000,000≈ 10.7%
2-chỉ ring at ₫13,300,000 per chỉ2 × ₫13,300,000₫26,600,000

These are example figures, not current quotes. The risk for a buyer is that a premium can shrink: if the domestic price falls back towards parity, an SJC bar can lose value even while world gold is unchanged.

Where Vietnamese buyers go

In Hanoi, the Old Quarter around Hàng Bạc has been a gold and silver trading street for centuries, and large dealers have showrooms across the city; in Ho Chi Minh City, District 1 and District 5 (Chợ Lớn) have long-established dealers. Large brands publish their buy and sell prices on their websites, and the gap between them is the spread you pay on a round trip. Demand peaks on the God of Wealth day (Thần Tài) early in the lunar new year, when many families buy a small amount of gold for luck, and queues and spreads can widen.

Tips

  • Compare the domestic quote with the parity line above, not just with yesterday's domestic price.
  • Look at the spread between buy and sell; on a volatile day it can be large.
  • Buy from licensed dealers and keep the invoice; bars and rings should carry the brand and purity.
  • For jewellery in vàng tây, ask the exact karat, because 18K and lower-purity pieces are priced very differently from 9999 gold.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams is one lượng of gold?
One lượng (also called cây or tael) is 37.5 grams. It is divided into 10 chỉ of 3.75 grams each.
Why is the SJC gold price higher than the world price?
SJC bars are supplied under tight control by the State Bank of Vietnam, while household demand is strong. Limited supply lets domestic bar prices trade above world parity. The size of the gap changes with policy and demand.
Are gold rings cheaper than SJC bars?
Plain 99.99% rings have usually traded closer to world parity than SJC bars, so per lượng they have often been cheaper. They still carry a dealer margin and a buy-sell spread.
What is the difference between vàng ta and vàng tây?
Vàng ta is pure (24K, 9999) gold used for rings and bars. Vàng tây is alloyed jewellery gold such as 18K (75%) or 14K (58.5%), which is harder and cheaper per chỉ.
Does this page show the SJC price?
No. The live table shows the world price converted into dong. Use it as a reference to measure how much premium a domestic quote contains.
