Gold Rate Today in Pakistan
The table below shows the gold rate in Pakistan per tola, per 10 grams and per gram for 24K, 22K and 21K, calculated live from the world price and the dollar–rupee rate. The sarafa (bullion market) rate announced each day can sit above or below this parity figure, and jewellers add making charges on top.

International parity: XAUUSD × USD/PKR, scaled to tola (11.6638 g), 10 g and 1 g. The sarafa association's daily rate and jewellers' rates include a local premium or discount; making charges and any sales tax are extra. How we calculate
How the Pakistani gold rate is formed
Pakistan imports nearly all its gold, so the starting point is the international price in US dollars per ounce. Converting at the dollar–rupee rate and scaling to the tola (exactly 3/8 of a troy ounce) gives the parity figure in the table. The rate people actually quote, however, is the one announced daily by the bullion traders' association in Karachi and repeated by sarafa markets across the country, usually per tola and per 10 grams for 24K gold.
That sarafa rate is often a little above parity and occasionally below it. The gap comes from local supply and demand, restrictions and paperwork on imports at various times, and the fact that traders may price off the open-market dollar rate rather than the interbank rate. When the rupee is under pressure, the premium tends to widen; when demand is weak, local gold can trade at a discount. Comparing the two numbers is a quick way to see whether local gold is expensive relative to the world market.
Units: tola, masha, ratti and grams
| Unit | Equivalent | Grams |
|---|---|---|
| 1 tola | 12 masha | 11.6638 |
| 1 masha | 8 ratti | 0.9720 |
| 1 ratti | 1/96 tola | 0.1215 |
| 10 grams | 0.857 tola | 10 |
Jewellers still describe weights as tola–masha–ratti, so a bangle might be written as "1 tola 3 masha". Our unit converter and the tola guide explain the conversions.
Karats sold in Pakistan
- 24K is traded as bars and biscuits for saving; the headline sarafa rate refers to it.
- 22K is used for heavier traditional jewellery and is preferred by many families who want higher resale value.
- 21K (87.5%) is the common standard for everyday and bridal jewellery because it is harder and holds detailed work.
- 18K is used for diamond and gemstone settings.
Hallmarking is not uniform across the trade, so ask for the purity in writing and consider testing at an independent laboratory for large purchases. See the 21K price page for the karat in detail.
Worked example: buying a 22K set
Suppose (illustratively) the jeweller's 22K rate is PKR 402,600 per tola and you buy a set weighing 2 tola, with a making charge of PKR 18,000 per tola.
| Item | Calculation | PKR |
|---|---|---|
| Gold value | 2 × 402,600 | 805,200 |
| Making charge | 2 × 18,000 | 36,000 |
| Total before any tax | 841,200 |
Making charges vary widely with design, and some jewellers quote them per gram or as a lump sum. When you later sell or exchange the set, expect a deduction from the gold value; agree on it before buying. Model your own numbers in the jewellery price calculator.
Where people buy gold in Pakistan
Karachi is the reference market, and its rate is followed in Lahore, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Quetta, Faisalabad and Multan, with small local differences. Every large city has a traditional sarafa bazaar where wholesalers and goldsmiths sit together, and newer branded jewellers in malls and upmarket shopping streets. See the Karachi page for how the daily rate is set there.
Zakat on gold
The gold nisab is commonly given as 7.5 tola (about 87.5 g) in Pakistan, while many scholars use the rounded 85 g figure. Zakat is 2.5% of the value of zakatable gold held for a lunar year. Use the zakat calculator with the live rate, and follow the opinion of your own scholar on jewellery in regular use.
Checklist
- Compare the sarafa rate with the parity figure above to see the size of the local premium.
- Confirm the karat (24K, 22K or 21K) the quoted rate refers to.
- Get weight in grams as well as tola–masha–ratti, and check it on the shop's scale.
- Ask for the making charge and the buy-back deduction in writing.
- Keep the receipt; it helps when you sell or exchange.
