How Bengaluru's rate compares

Bengaluru jewellers take the same national landed price as everyone else: the international price in rupees plus 6% customs duty, adjusted by the dealer's premium or discount. The city's board rate normally sits within a narrow band of Chennai and Hyderabad. Karnataka buyers use both grams and the 8-gram unit, and in Kannada gold is chinna (or bangara), words you will see on shop signs and bills.

Lightweight and 18K: a Bengaluru pattern

The city's large salaried workforce has made lightweight jewellery, 18K diamond pieces and gold coins a big part of sales, alongside traditional 22K wedding gold. 18K (75% gold) is harder than 22K, holds stones securely and costs less per gram, but it carries a higher making charge and has lower resale value relative to the price paid, because the diamonds are rarely bought back at their selling price.

Example: an 18K diamond pendant

Suppose the illustrative 18K rate is ₹10,000 per gram, the pendant contains 4.5 g of gold, and the certified diamonds are priced at ₹28,000:

LineWorkingAmount
Gold4.5 g × ₹10,000₹45,000
Making18% of gold value₹8,100
Diamondsas certified₹28,000
GST3% of ₹81,100₹2,433
Total₹83,533

Gold is only about 54% of the price here. If you resell, most jewellers pay for the gold at the 18K rate and offer a percentage of the diamond value under their own buy-back policy, so read it first. For plain gold pieces, use the jewellery price calculator; for purity maths see the 18K gold price page.

Traditional Karnataka gold

Kannada weddings feature a thaali or mangalsutra whose design varies by community, heavy necklaces such as the coin-studded kasina sara, a waist belt (odyana), and armlets. Mysuru-style designs with Lakshmi and temple motifs are popular. Families in north Karnataka often follow different styles from Bengaluru, Mysuru and coastal Karnataka.

Festival buying

Ugadi, the Kannada new year, starts the buying calendar. Varamahalakshmi vrata in the month of Shravana is especially important in Karnataka: women worship Lakshmi and many buy gold coins or jewellery for the day. Akshaya Tritiya, Dasara (with its strong Mysuru tradition), Deepavali and the wedding seasons follow. See Akshaya Tritiya gold for how festival offers work.

Bengaluru tips

  • For diamond pieces, ask for a grading certificate and separate gold weight, stone weight and stone value on the invoice.
  • Check the BIS hallmark and HUID even on small pieces and coins (how to verify).
  • In Chickpet, compare two or three shops on making charge for the same weight.
  • Ask about buy-back and exchange percentages for gold and diamonds separately.
  • If a showroom offers "zero making charge" on 18K, check whether the diamond price has been raised to compensate; compare the stone price per carat with another store.

Selling or pledging gold in Bengaluru

Many buyers in the city sell or exchange gold with the jeweller who sold it, because the original invoice and HUID make valuation quick. Elsewhere, expect an XRF or karat meter test and a deduction from the day's rate. Gold loans from banks and NBFCs are also widely used in Karnataka; lenders value only the gold content, not stones or making. Our guide to selling gold lists the documents to carry.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 22K gold rate in Bangalore today?
The live table shows the indicative 22K rate per gram, per 8 grams and per 10 grams, including 6% import duty. Jewellers add 3% GST and making charges at billing.
Is gold cheaper in Chickpet than in Bengaluru showrooms?
Chickpet jewellers often have lower making charges for plain gold, but the gold rate is similar across the city. Compare the total bill and check the hallmark.
Is 18K gold a good buy in Bengaluru?
18K suits diamond and daily-wear jewellery because it is harder. As a store of value it is weaker than 22K or 24K, because you pay more making charges and diamonds lose value on resale.
Is the Bangalore gold rate different from Mysuru or Mangaluru?
Rates across Karnataka are very close because the landed cost is national. Small differences come from local dealer premiums and jewellers' pricing.
