How gold is priced in Bangladesh
The Bangladesh Jewellers Association, known as BAJUS, announces the selling rates that member jewellers use, typically per vori and per gram, in four categories: 22 karat, 21 karat, 18 karat and traditional (sanatan) gold. It revises them whenever the international price or the local cost of gold changes enough, sometimes several times in a month, and announcements usually take effect from a stated date and time.
The BAJUS rate does not mechanically follow international parity. Legal imports of gold have historically been small compared with demand, a lot of jewellery is made from recycled gold, and the taka exchange rate used in the market can differ from the official one. As a result the local rate can stay above parity for long periods. The table above lets you measure that gap: compare the BAJUS 22K vori rate with the 22K vori line.
Categories and units
| Category | Gold content | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| 22 karat | 91.6% | Most bridal and high-value jewellery |
| 21 karat | 87.5% | Everyday jewellery, harder wearing |
| 18 karat | 75% | Diamond and stone-set pieces |
| Traditional (sanatan) | lower, not standardised | Older-style jewellery, priced lowest |
Weight is measured in vori, ana and rati: 1 vori = 16 ana = 11.664 g, so 1 ana is 0.729 g, and 1 ana = 6 rati. A pair of earrings might be "3 ana", a bangle "1 vori 4 ana". The unit converter handles vori.
Worked example
Suppose (illustratively) the BAJUS 22K rate is BDT 178,000 per vori and the jeweller charges 6% making on the gold value.
| Item | Calculation | BDT |
|---|---|---|
| Necklace, 1.5 vori of 22K | 1.5 × 178,000 | 267,000 |
| Making charge | 6% × 267,000 | 16,020 |
| Subtotal before VAT | 267,000 + 16,020 | 283,020 |
| Earrings, 3 ana of 22K (2.187 g) | 3 ÷ 16 × 178,000 | 33,375 |
VAT is added on top under the rules in force when you buy; ask the shop to show it separately on the receipt. Making charges vary with design and are higher for intricate handmade pieces. Try the figures in the jewellery price calculator.
Where people buy
In Dhaka, the jewellery shops around Baitul Mukarram are the best-known retail cluster, and Tanti Bazar in Old Dhaka has a long tradition of goldsmiths and small workshops. Branded jewellers also operate in the large shopping malls of Dhaka and Chattogram. Demand rises in the wedding season, around Eid and during Durga Puja and the Bengali New Year (Pohela Boishakh), when families buy gifts.
Many Bangladeshis working in the Gulf bring gold home, and gold bought in Dubai or Saudi Arabia is commonly compared against BAJUS rates. Customs allowances and duties for passengers carrying gold are set by the National Board of Revenue and have changed several times, so check the current rules before travelling. Compare Gulf prices on our UAE and Saudi Arabia pages.
Selling and exchanging
When you sell gold back, jewellers usually deduct a percentage from the current BAJUS rate for the same category, and the deduction is often lower when you exchange for new jewellery. Pieces are tested for purity, so a 22K label must match the metal. Keep your receipt; it helps prove purity and weight.
