How the Australian gold price works
Australian dealers price gold from the international US dollar spot price converted at the AUD/USD rate. Australia is one of the world's largest gold producers, but local miners sell at world prices, so the domestic price is not lower. The Australian dollar tends to be sensitive to commodity prices and global risk sentiment, so gold in AUD can behave differently from gold in USD: in some sell-offs the Aussie dollar falls faster than gold, cushioning the local price.
The Perth Mint
The Perth Mint, owned by the Government of Western Australia, refines a large share of the country's newly mined gold and produces the Australian Kangaroo bullion coin, Lunar series coins and minted and cast bars. Its products are sold through its Perth shop, online and through dealers across the country and abroad. Australian investors also buy bars from other refiners and coins from other mints, such as Maple Leafs and Britannias.
Carats used in Australia
| Carat | Gold content | Common use |
|---|---|---|
| 24ct (9999 or 999) | 99.9%+ | Bullion coins and bars |
| 22ct (916) | 91.6% | Indian and Middle Eastern jewellery, some coins |
| 18ct (750) | 75% | Engagement and fine jewellery |
| 9ct (375) | 37.5% | Everyday jewellery, very common locally |
Australia does not have a mandatory national hallmarking system, so stamps on jewellery are applied by manufacturers. A reputable jeweller will test and certify purity on request. Read our guide to checking purity.
GST and capital gains tax
- Investment gold is GST-free when it is at least 99.5% pure and in an investment form such as a bar, wafer or coin traded at or near its metal value.
- Jewellery carries 10% GST, already included in the shelf price.
- Capital gains tax applies when you sell gold at a profit. Individuals who hold an asset for more than 12 months generally get the 50% CGT discount. Collectables rules can apply to some items such as jewellery and rare coins. Confirm with the ATO or an accountant.
Worked example
Illustrative only. Suppose gold is A$6,308.00 per ounce, or A$202.81 per gram.
| Item | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| 1 oz Kangaroo at 3.5% over spot | A$6,308.00 × 1.035 | A$6,528.78 |
| GST on the coin | GST-free (99.99% pure) | A$0.00 |
| Melt value of a 5 g 9ct bracelet | 5 × A$202.81 × 0.375 | A$380.27 |
| 3 g of 18ct metal plus 10% GST | 3 × A$202.81 × 0.75 × 1.10 | A$501.95 |
The last line is metal and GST only; a real 18ct ring would add design, labour and stones on top. Check your own figures with the gold calculator.
Where Australians buy and sell
Bullion is bought from the Perth Mint, from dealers in the capital cities (many with online stores and vault storage), and in exchange-traded form through gold ETFs listed on the ASX. Jewellers sell 9ct and 18ct pieces in shopping centres, and specialist jewellers in suburbs with large Indian and Middle Eastern communities sell 22ct gold by weight. To sell, dealers buy back bullion at a quoted price, while scrap buyers offer a percentage of melt value.
Tips
- Compare the all-in price per ounce of gold content, including delivery or storage fees.
- Check the dealer's published buy-back price before buying; a low spread matters for resale.
- Keep records of purchase dates and costs for CGT.
- For 9ct jewellery, remember that more than 60% of the metal is not gold when comparing offers.
