Where the tola comes from

The tola is an old South Asian unit of weight with roots in the Sanskrit word for a balance or scale. Its value varied by region until British India fixed it at 180 grains, which equals 11.6638 grams, in the 1830s; the silver rupee coin of the time weighed exactly one tola. India adopted the metric system in the 1950s, but the tola never left the gold trade. Today it remains the main retail unit in Pakistan and Nepal, is widely used in Bangladesh (where the equivalent vori is 11.664 g), and survives in the Gulf through the ten-tola bar. 1 tola12 masha
1 masha8 ratti ≈ 0.972 g
10 tola (TT bar)116.638 g

One tola is exactly 0.375 troy ounces (180 grains ÷ 480 grains per troy ounce), which makes converting from the dollar ounce price easy. Convert other units with the gold unit converter.

Worked example

Suppose spot gold is $4,150 an ounce (illustrative). One tola of 24K gold is 4,150 × 0.375 = $1,556.25. A tola of 22K gold contains 91.6% gold, so it is worth 1,556.25 × 0.916 = $1,425.53. If one US dollar buys 281 Pakistani rupees (illustrative), the 24K tola works out to Rs 437,306 at international parity. A ten-tola bar at the same rates is Rs 4,373,063.

Why local tola rates differ from parity

The table shows what a tola is worth at international prices. Local markets set their own rates:

  • Pakistan: sarafa associations in Karachi and other cities announce a daily rate per tola and per 10 grams for 24K gold. It can sit above international parity when import supply is restricted or the rupee is weak, and occasionally below. See gold rate in Pakistan and Karachi.
  • Nepal: the gold dealers' federation publishes a daily rate per tola for fine (hallmark) gold and tejabi gold. It includes Nepal's customs duty, so it is normally well above parity. See gold rate in Nepal.
  • India: some northern and western markets still quote per tola, but most jewellers use per gram and per 10 grams. The table's Indian row includes the 6% import duty; GST of 3% is added at billing.
  • Gulf: retailers price jewellery per gram, but ten-tola bars are a staple product for South Asian buyers. See gold rate in the UAE.

Buying a ten-tola bar

The ten-tola bar, often called a TT bar, weighs 116.64 g and is usually 999 or 999.9 fine. It is the standard savings bar for many families in Pakistan and Nepal and for South Asian workers in the Gulf, because it is large enough to carry a low premium per gram but small enough to buy in one go. At the illustrative $1,556.25 per tola, a TT bar has a melt value of $15,562.50. Gulf dealers sell them with a modest premium over spot, and bars from well-known refiners are easier to resell. Travellers carrying bars across borders should check customs allowances for the country they are entering, since duty-free limits on gold are low in South Asia.

Tola vs 10 grams

A tola is 16.6% heavier than 10 grams. If a rate quoted per 10 grams is Rs 375,000 (illustrative), the tola equivalent is 375,000 × 1.16638 = Rs 437,393. Mixing the two units is the most common error when comparing Pakistani rates with Indian or international ones, so check which unit a quote uses before comparing.
