How the Hyderabad gold rate is set
Hyderabad does not have its own gold price. Jewellers start from the same landed cost as the rest of India: the international price in US dollars, converted to rupees, plus the 6% customs duty (5% basic duty and 1% agriculture infrastructure cess) charged on imported gold. Bullion dealers in the city add their own premium or discount, and each jewellery chain then publishes a board rate in the morning, sometimes revising it in the afternoon if the international market moves sharply.
Because the inputs are national, the Hyderabad rate normally tracks Vijayawada, Bengaluru and Chennai within a small margin. Differences come from the local dealer premium, transport and insurance from the import hub, and how aggressively a jeweller wants to price on the day.
What you actually pay: a worked example
Suppose the indicative 22K rate in the table is ₹11,600 per gram and you buy a 20-gram chain with a 12% making charge:
| Item | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Gold value | 20 g × ₹11,600 | ₹2,32,000 |
| Making charge | 12% of gold value | ₹27,840 |
| Hallmark (HUID) fee | per piece | ₹45 |
| GST | 3% of ₹2,59,885 | ₹7,797 |
| Total | ₹2,67,682 |
The example rate is illustrative; use today's live figure and your jeweller's actual making charge in the jewellery price calculator. Note that GST on a finished piece is 3% of the whole invoice, making charge included. The 5% rate only applies to job work, when you hand your own gold to a goldsmith.
22K, 24K or 18K: what Hyderabad buyers choose
- 22K (916) is the standard for necklaces, bangles and wedding sets. It holds detailed work such as the Nizami-style satlada and jadau pieces the old city is known for.
- 24K (999) is sold as coins and bars for saving and for festival purchases. It is too soft for most jewellery.
- 18K (750) is used for diamond and gemstone settings and lightweight daily wear, where the extra hardness keeps stones secure.
See the karat guide for how each purity is marked and priced.
Where people buy gold in Hyderabad
Large chain showrooms are concentrated around Abids, Somajiguda, Punjagutta, Himayatnagar, Kukatpally and Dilsukhnagar, and most national and south Indian chains run several stores in the city. The traditional jewellers of the old city, around Charminar, Pathergatti and Gulzar Houz, are known for pearls (Hyderabad is called the City of Pearls) set in gold, as well as custom work.
Wherever you buy, the rate per gram is only one part of the price. Compare the making charge, the wastage (if any is quoted separately), the buy-back terms and whether stones are weighed into the gold weight.
When demand peaks
Buying in Hyderabad clusters around Akshaya Tritiya, Dasara and Dhanteras, Ugadi and Sankranti, and the Telugu wedding seasons. Showrooms get busy and some advertise "rate protection" (booking at today's rate for later delivery). The underlying gold price does not rise because of local festivals, but making-charge discounts and offers change, so compare offers rather than waiting for a cheaper rate.
Checklist before you pay
- Look for the BIS hallmark: the BIS logo, the purity grade (for example 22K916) and a six-character HUID code. Hallmarking has been compulsory for jewellery sold in Hyderabad district since 2021, and the HUID since April 2023. You can verify the HUID in the BIS CARE app. Read our hallmark guide.
- Ask for net gold weight and gross weight separately when the piece has stones, enamel or lac.
- Get the making charge in writing as a percentage or rupees per gram.
- Insist on a GST invoice showing purity, weight, rate per gram and HUID.
- Ask about the exchange and buy-back deduction before buying, not when you sell.
