International parity from XAUUSD × USD/OMR (the rial is pegged at about 2.6 dollars). Shop margins, making charges and VAT are extra. How we calculate
How the Omani gold rate is set
The Omani rial is pegged to the US dollar at 0.3845 rial per dollar, or about 2.60 dollars per rial, so the rial price of gold moves exactly with the dollar price. Muscat jewellers display per-gram rates for each karat, close to the parity figures above plus a margin. Like the Kuwaiti dinar, the rial is a high-value unit divided into 1,000 baisa, so prices per gram are quoted to three decimal places.
VAT on gold in Oman
Oman introduced VAT at a standard rate of 5% in April 2021. Gold jewellery is subject to it, and the rate appears on the invoice. Investment gold that meets the purity conditions in Oman's VAT law, such as high-purity bars and bullion coins, is zero-rated, so buyers of 24K bars from a registered dealer should not see VAT added. Ask for a tax invoice either way.
Karats and local traditions
| Karat | Gold content | Use in Oman |
|---|---|---|
| 24K | 99.9% | Bars and coins |
| 22K | 91.6% | South Asian residents and many Omani buyers |
| 21K | 87.5% | Traditional Gulf jewellery |
| 18K | 75% | Diamond and modern designs |
Oman also has a strong tradition of silver craftsmanship, from the decorated sheath of the khanjar dagger to Bedouin jewellery, and silversmiths' work is sold alongside gold in the souks. Historically, much Omani bridal jewellery was silver; gold has since become the main choice for wedding sets.
Worked example
Illustrative only. Suppose 22K is OMR 47.000 per gram and the jeweller charges OMR 1.000 per gram for making.
| Item | Calculation | OMR |
|---|---|---|
| 22K necklace, 20 g | 20 × 47.000 | 940.000 |
| Making charge | 20 × 1.000 | 20.000 |
| Subtotal before VAT | 960.000 |
VAT at 5% is then charged as shown on the jeweller's tax invoice; on the full subtotal it would be OMR 48.000. Use the jewellery price calculator for other weights.
Wedding gold
As across the Gulf, gold given to the bride is a central part of an Omani wedding, and families often buy complete sets of necklace, earrings, bracelets and rings together. Because a set can weigh well over 100 grams, small differences in the making charge per gram matter: a 0.500 OMR per gram difference on a 120 g set is OMR 60.000 before VAT. Getting the gold weight and the making charge as separate lines on the quote makes sets from different shops comparable.
Selling or exchanging gold in Oman
Jewellers buy back at the day's rate for the karat minus a deduction, and the making charge and VAT paid on jewellery are not recovered. Exchanging for new pieces at the same shop usually attracts a smaller deduction than a cash sale. High-purity bars from known refiners, bought without VAT, lose the least on resale.
Where to buy in Oman
Muttrah Souq, on the Corniche in old Muscat, is the country's best-known traditional market, with gold and silver shops among its covered lanes. Muscat's malls and commercial areas such as Ruwi host jewellery chains, and Nizwa, Sohar and Salalah have their own souks. Oman's large South Asian community makes 22K jewellery and tola bars widely available, and prices are close between shops; making charges and design decide the final bill.
Checklist
- Compare the shop's per-gram rate with the parity table, to three decimals.
- Agree the making charge per gram before weighing.
- Ask for a VAT invoice showing karat, weight, rate, making and VAT.
- For bars, confirm purity and refiner stamp so the VAT zero rate applies.
- Check your home customs allowance if you will carry gold abroad.
