Buying Gold on Akshaya Tritiya
Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third day of the bright half of the Hindu month of Vaishakha, usually in late April or May, and is considered one of the most auspicious days to buy gold. The word akshaya means imperishable, so purchases made on this day are believed to grow and last. The festival does not change the gold price, but shop offers, crowds and pre-booking schemes do.
What the festival is
Akshaya Tritiya (also called Akha Teej in parts of western and northern India) is observed by Hindus and Jains. It is one of a handful of days regarded as wholly auspicious, so no specific muhurat is required to start new ventures, marry, buy property or invest. In Hindu tradition it is linked with the birth of Parashurama and with stories of lasting abundance; in Jain tradition it marks the day Rishabhanatha broke his long fast, and many Jains end year-long fasts on this day.
Because the date follows the lunar calendar (Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya), it moves each year within roughly late April to late May. Check a panchang or your jeweller's announcement for the exact date and the tritiya timings, which can begin on the previous evening.
Regional observances
The day carries different associations across India. In Odisha, construction of the chariots for the Puri Rath Yatra traditionally begins on Akshaya Tritiya. In Uttarakhand, the Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines reopen for the pilgrimage season around this day. In Rajasthan and Gujarat, Akha Teej has long been a popular wedding date, while in south India the gold-buying custom has grown strongly over recent decades, driven partly by jewellers' promotions. Those regional habits shape what sells: light 22K chains and coins in the north and west, heavier traditional sets and sovereign (8 g) coins in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
Why gold is bought on this day
The idea of something that "never diminishes" fits gold naturally, and buying even a small coin is treated as a token of prosperity for the year. Gold demand in India spikes sharply on the day; jewellers extend hours, run making-charge offers and launch coin promotions. Many families also buy silver or start a savings scheme instead when gold prices are high.
Coins, jewellery or something else
| Option | Purity | Extra cost over gold value | Resale |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24K coin or bar (1–10 g) | 999 or 995 | Small premium plus 3% GST | Easy at jewellers and dealers; best with original packaging |
| 22K jewellery | 916 | Making charge (often 8–25%) plus 3% GST on the whole bill | Making charge and GST are lost on resale |
| Gold ETF or gold fund | Tracks 999 gold | Annual expense ratio; brokerage | Sell on exchange or redeem with the fund |
| Digital gold | 24K, vaulted | 3% GST plus buy-sell spread | Sell in the app; outside SEBI/RBI regulation |
If the purchase is mainly symbolic or for saving, a small 24K coin keeps more of its value than a piece of jewellery. If you plan to wear it, buy jewellery you actually want; the making charge is the cost of the design. For a detailed comparison see gold ETF vs physical gold and digital gold.
What a small purchase costs (illustrative)
Suppose the 24K rate including import duty is ₹13,400 per gram and a jeweller sells a 2 g coin at a 4% premium:
| Item | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Gold value | 2 g × ₹13,400 | ₹26,800 |
| Coin premium | 4% of ₹26,800 | ₹1,072 |
| GST | 3% of ₹27,872 | ₹836.16 |
| Total | ₹28,708.16 |
Selling the coin back the next day would return roughly the gold value minus the buyer's deduction, so the premium and GST are the cost of the purchase. Use the gold calculator with today's live rate.
Pre-booking and rate protection
Many jewellers open bookings a week or two before the festival. You pay an advance (often a fixed share of the expected bill) and lock in the gold rate on the booking day, then collect on Akshaya Tritiya. Before booking, ask:
- If the rate falls by the festival, do you get the lower rate or the booked one?
- Is the advance refundable, and is the booking limited to certain designs or coins?
- Is the making-charge offer tied to the booking or available to walk-in buyers too?
Checklist for the day
- Note the live rate on our India gold rate page before you go; jewellers' boards normally sit close to it.
- Check the BIS hallmark and HUID on jewellery, and the purity and weight printed on coin packaging. See the hallmark guide.
- Compare making charges across two or three shops; festival "zero making" offers often apply only to selected designs.
- Get a GST invoice listing weight, purity, rate, making charge and HUID.
- Expect crowds and long billing queues; buying on a pre-booked slot or online for in-store pickup saves time.
