The coastal Karnataka market

Mangaluru is the commercial centre of Dakshina Kannada and serves buyers from Udupi and the surrounding coast. Its gold rate is the national landed cost plus local margins, so it follows Bengaluru closely. The city's buyers are diverse: Tulu-speaking, Konkani-speaking, Beary and Catholic communities each have their own wedding traditions, and that variety shows in the range of designs jewellers stock, from heavy temple-style 22K sets to lighter contemporary pieces.

Many families in the region have members working in the Gulf, and gold bought abroad is a common topic at local counters. Passengers can bring jewellery within a duty-free allowance set by customs, with limits depending on gender and length of stay abroad; anything above it attracts duty. Check the current customs rules before relying on a Gulf purchase being cheaper, and remember that jewellery bought abroad may not carry a BIS hallmark, which can affect resale in India.

Shopping areas

The Hampankatta and Car Street areas in the old city have long-established jewellers, and branded showrooms line the city's main roads. With both regional chains and national brands present, competition on making charges is real, and it is worth getting written estimates from more than one shop for any wedding purchase.

Comparing two quotes the right way

Two shops can quote the same board rate and very different final prices. Suppose (illustrative) both price 22K at ₹12,200 per gram for a 24 g necklace (three sovereigns). Shop A charges a flat 12% making. Shop B charges 7% VA plus ₹250 per gram making:

ItemShop AShop B
Gold: 24 g × ₹12,200₹2,92,800₹2,92,800
Making / VA₹35,136 (12%)₹20,496 (7% VA)
Per-gram makingnil₹6,000 (24 g × ₹250)
Subtotal₹3,27,936₹3,19,296
GST at 3%₹9,838.08₹9,578.88
Total₹3,37,774.08₹3,28,874.88

Shop B is ₹8,899.20 cheaper even though its bill has two charges. Always reduce every quote to a single rupee total for the same weight and purity. The jewellery price calculator does this quickly.

Sovereign coins and small gifts

On the coast, as across south India, an 8 g 22K coin, often called a sovereign coin, is a common gift for naming ceremonies, housewarmings and weddings. Because it is 22K rather than 24K, it can later be added to old gold and exchanged for jewellery without a purity argument, provided it is hallmarked. A 24K coin of the same weight contains more gold and costs more; compare the price per gram of pure gold, not per coin. The gold coin prices page lists common weights.

Selling or exchanging in Mangaluru

When you sell, jewellers value gold at their buying rate, which is below the selling board rate, and deduct for purity shortfalls and sometimes for stones. Pieces bought in the Gulf are tested like any unhallmarked gold. Bring the original invoice if you have it, ask for the XRF purity reading, and compare offers; how to sell gold explains the usual deductions.

Festivals and seasons

  • Navaratri and Dasara, celebrated on a large scale in Mangaluru, and Deepavali.
  • Akshaya Tritiya and Varamahalakshmi, both popular for coins and small pieces.
  • Christmas and the wedding months for the city's Catholic community, and Eid for Muslim families.
  • The return of Gulf workers on annual leave, which brings its own spike in wedding purchases.

Things to confirm

  1. BIS hallmark with grade and six-character HUID on every piece sold in India. See BIS hallmark and HUID.
  2. All making, VA and per-gram charges listed separately and totalled.
  3. Net weight excluding stones and beads.
  4. Buy-back terms, especially for pieces with stones.
  5. A GST invoice; keep it with the jewellery.

Frequently asked questions

Is gold cheaper in Dubai than in Mangalore?
The international price is the same everywhere. India adds 6% import duty and 3% GST, while the UAE has no import duty and charges VAT, which tourists can sometimes reclaim. Making charges differ too. See the Dubai gold rate page, and check Indian customs allowances before buying abroad.
What is VA in Mangalore jewellery bills?
Value addition, a percentage added to the gold value to cover wastage and labour. Some shops add a separate per-gram making charge on top, as in the example above.
Is the Mangalore rate the same as Udupi?
Practically yes. Both draw on the same supply chain, and differences between individual jewellers are larger than any difference between the two towns.
How many sovereigns is a 24 g necklace?
Three. One sovereign or pavan is 8 grams, so the 8-gram row in the live table multiplied by three gives the indicative gold value before making and GST.
