How the Trichy rate follows Chennai
Tamil Nadu's jewellers broadly follow the 22K rate set each morning in Chennai, where the state's bullion trade is concentrated. Trichy showrooms take that figure and adjust for their own margin, so the city normally trades within a few rupees of Chennai. The live table here is the national reference (international price plus 6% customs duty) without local margins.
In Tamil, gold is thangam, and wedding gold is counted in pavun or sovereigns of 8 grams. A family planning "ten pavun" for a daughter's wedding means 80 g of 22K jewellery.
Where Trichy shops for gold
The busiest jewellery district is in the old town below the Rockfort, around NSB Road, Big Bazaar Street and the Teppakulam area, where large Tamil Nadu chains sit beside older family shops. Srirangam, across the Kaveri, has its own jewellers serving pilgrims and local families. Thillai Nagar and the newer parts of the city have branded showrooms with parking, which many families prefer for wedding shopping.
Worked example: a five-pavun thali chain
The thirumangalyam (thali) and its chain are the most important pieces in a Tamil wedding. Tamil Nadu jewellers typically quote wastage (also called VA, sedharam in Tamil) as a percentage of gold value, often with little or no separate making charge. Suppose (illustrative) the 22K rate is ₹12,280 per gram, and the chain weighs five pavun (40 g) with 9% wastage:
| Item | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Gold | 40 g × ₹12,280 | ₹4,91,200 |
| Wastage / VA | 9% of gold value | ₹44,208 |
| Subtotal | ₹5,35,408 | |
| GST | 3% of ₹5,35,408 | ₹16,062.24 |
| Total | ₹5,51,470.24 |
Wastage on plain machine-made chains is usually lower than on handmade or intricate designs. The thali pendant itself often follows a family or community design (different for different castes and regions), so it may be made to order with a separate charge. Get the wastage percentage written on the estimate and compare it across two or three shops. See making charges explained.
Temple jewellery and the wedding calendar
Trichy is surrounded by major temples, including Srirangam's Ranganathaswamy temple and Thiruvanaikaval, and temple-style jewellery, with deity motifs, kemp stones and heavy 22K settings, is a staple for brides and classical dancers. Weddings cluster in the auspicious Tamil months, notably Thai, Panguni, Vaikasi and Aavani, while Aadi is traditionally avoided for weddings, and many showrooms run Aadi discount offers to keep sales moving. Akshaya Tritiya draws long queues in Tamil Nadu, and Deepavali and Pongal are also busy.
Gold savings schemes
Most Tamil Nadu jewellers run monthly instalment schemes that end in a jewellery purchase, sometimes with the last instalment or the wastage waived. Read the terms on how the gold weight is fixed (at each month's rate, or at the redemption date) and what happens if you stop paying.
Selling or exchanging old gold
Tamil families often exchange old pavun jewellery for new designs before a wedding. Jewellers test the purity, apply their buying rate and may deduct a percentage. Shops usually give a better deal on exchange than on outright sale, because they earn the wastage on the new piece. Bring your old invoices, ask for the purity reading in writing and compare at least two shops. Our selling guide covers the details.
