A jewellery-making city
Coimbatore is better known to the trade as a place where jewellery is made than as a place where it is sold. The city and its surroundings have a large community of goldsmiths and many manufacturing units, from traditional hand workshops to factories producing machine-made chains, bangles and lightweight jewellery that are sold across south India and exported. For local buyers this means plenty of choice in plain 22K designs, and access to goldsmiths who will make, repair or remodel pieces to order.
The rate follows Tamil Nadu's daily rate, which in turn rests on the international price in rupees plus 6% customs duty and the bullion premium. Coimbatore boards are typically within a small margin of Chennai.
Where to buy in Coimbatore
The older commercial centre around Town Hall, including Big Bazaar Street and the streets near it, has long-established jewellers and goldsmith workshops. Cross Cut Road in Gandhipuram and R. S. Puram host large showrooms of chains, and there are branches along Avinashi Road and in Saibaba Colony, Peelamedu and Singanallur. Buyers from Tiruppur, Pollachi, Erode and the Nilgiris also shop here for weddings.
Remaking your own gold: job work example
Because goldsmiths are close at hand, many Coimbatore families remake old jewellery rather than exchange it. When you give your own gold to a goldsmith and pay only for labour, the work is "job work" and GST is 5% on the labour charge, not 3% on the gold. Suppose (illustrative) you hand over 24 g of old 22K jewellery to be made into a new chain. After melting and refining, 23.7 g of 22K gold remains, and the goldsmith charges ₹400 per gram:
| Line | Working | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Gold supplied | your own old jewellery | 24 g |
| Weight after melting | illustrative 0.3 g loss | 23.7 g |
| Labour | 23.7 g × ₹400 | ₹9,480 |
| GST on job work | 5% of ₹9,480 | ₹474 |
| You pay | ₹9,954 |
Ask for the gold to be weighed in front of you before and after melting, agree the acceptable loss in advance, and request a hallmark on the finished piece if it will be sold later. If the old gold tests below 22K, the goldsmith may need to add fine gold, which you pay for at the day's rate. See GST on gold for when 3% and 5% apply.
Kongu wedding gold
Coimbatore is the heart of the Kongu region of western Tamil Nadu. Weddings feature the thaali on a heavy thaali kodi chain, with designs that differ by community, along with necklaces, bangles and a waist ornament. Many families build up gold over years by buying coins and small chains, then convert them into wedding sets with a local goldsmith or showroom. Plain, heavy 22K designs are popular because they hold value when exchanged.
Festivals and seasons
Tamil New Year in April, Akshaya Tritiya, Aadi Perukku, Deepavali and Pongal are all occasions for buying gold in Coimbatore, and the Thai month after Pongal starts a busy wedding season. During Aadi, when weddings are generally avoided, showrooms advertise offers on VA. The international price is unaffected by local dates. Read Akshaya Tritiya gold for how festival offers compare.
Coimbatore buying checklist
- For new jewellery, check the BIS hallmark, purity (22K916) and HUID (verify).
- Ask whether VA includes wastage (settharam) and making (seikooli) or bills them separately; the making charges guide explains both.
- For job work, get a written receipt showing the weight and purity of gold you handed over.
- Compare a manufacturer-linked showroom with a chain on the same design and weight.
- Keep every invoice for future exchange or sale.
