Same gold price, different jewellery mix
The gold rate in Surat is built the same way as in Ahmedabad, Mumbai or Delhi: the dollar price of gold, converted to rupees, plus 6% customs duty, plus a small dealer margin. What makes Surat different is not the rate but what people buy. The city cuts and polishes the large majority of the world's diamonds, with trading concentrated around Mahidharpura and Varachha and the Surat Diamond Bourse at Khajod. That industry shapes local demand: a larger share of purchases here are diamond-set pieces in 18K gold, and many families have relatives in the trade who know stone grading well.
Surat is also a major centre for manufacturing lab-grown diamonds. Buyers in the city are more likely than most to be offered a choice between natural and lab-grown stones in the same 18K setting, and the price gap between the two can be larger than the gold value itself.
How an 18K diamond pendant is billed
Diamond jewellery has three separate parts on the invoice: gold by net weight, stones by carat, and making. Suppose (illustrative figures) the 18K rate is ₹10,000 per gram, the pendant contains 6 g of gold and 0.50 carat of diamonds, and making is ₹900 per gram:
| Item | Natural diamonds | Lab-grown diamonds |
|---|---|---|
| Gold: 6 g × ₹10,000 | ₹60,000 | ₹60,000 |
| Diamonds: 0.50 ct | ₹30,000 (at ₹60,000/ct) | ₹5,000 (at ₹10,000/ct) |
| Making: 6 g × ₹900 | ₹5,400 | ₹5,400 |
| Subtotal | ₹95,400 | ₹70,400 |
| GST at 3% | ₹2,862 | ₹2,112 |
| Total | ₹98,262 | ₹72,512 |
The diamond prices above are illustrative; real per-carat prices depend on size, colour, clarity and cut. The point is structural: when you resell, the gold part is valued at the day's 18K rate, while the stones are often bought back at a steep discount or not at all, and lab-grown stones have very little resale value. Ask for a separate stone certificate and the buy-back policy in writing.
Why 18K suits diamond work
18K gold is 75% pure, and the copper or silver alloy in the other 25% makes it harder than 22K. Prongs and bezels hold stones more securely, which is why almost all diamond jewellery is made in 18K or 14K. Plain gold pieces (chains, bangles, wedding sets) are still usually 22K. See the 18K gold price page for how its rate relates to 24K.
Gujarati buying occasions in Surat
- Dhanteras and Diwali: coins, small bars and jewellery, followed by the Gujarati New Year (Bestu Varas) the day after Diwali.
- Labh Pancham: the fifth day of the new year, when many traders reopen their businesses and some buy gold.
- Pushya Nakshatra days, especially when they fall on a Thursday (Guru Pushya), are considered auspicious for buying gold across Gujarat.
- Weddings: the bride's family and the groom's family each traditionally give gold, and diamond sets have become common alongside plain 22K pieces.
None of these occasions changes the international gold price; what changes is the offers on making charges. Read buying gold on Dhanteras before the season.
Checks specific to diamond-set pieces
- Confirm the gold hallmark: BIS logo, purity (18K750) and the six-character HUID. Hallmarking covers the gold, not the diamonds. See BIS hallmark and HUID.
- Ask whether the stones are natural or lab-grown, and get it written on the invoice and certificate.
- Make sure the invoice lists gold net weight and diamond carat weight separately. Gold should never be billed on gross weight.
- Check how making is charged: per gram, as a percentage, or as a flat amount per piece.
- Ask what percentage of the diamond value the jeweller will return on exchange or buy-back.
