10K gold is 41.7% pure, so it is worth 0.417 times the 24K price. The live tables below show 10K gold per gram, per 10 grams, per troy ounce and per pennyweight in US dollars, and one gram of 10K in eight other currencies, before any dealer margin.

What 10K and 417 mean
10 karat gold is 10 parts gold in 24: 41.67%, stamped 10K, 10KT or 417. More than half of the metal is alloy, usually silver, copper and zinc (with nickel or palladium in white 10K). This site prices 10K at a factor of 0.417.
10K is the lowest karat that may be sold as "gold" in the United States; below it, a piece cannot legally be marketed as gold jewelry there. The UK's lowest standard is 9K (375), common in British high-street jewellery.
Where 10K is common
10K is mainly a North American karat: it is used for class rings, championship and graduation rings, budget chains and earrings, and men's signet rings. It is rare in India, Pakistan and the Gulf, where buyers expect 22K or 21K and where 10K would be seen as low purity. If you inherit American 10K jewellery and sell it in South Asia, the buyer will test it and pay on the 41.7% gold content.

Every row is international parity: the live gold price converted at the live exchange rate and multiplied by the purity factor. The India row excludes the 6% import duty and 3% GST; local market and jeweller rates in India, Pakistan and the Gulf usually sit somewhat above parity.
Durability and colour
With nearly 60% alloy, 10K is the hardest and most scratch-resistant common gold. That suits rings worn during sport or manual work. The trade-off is colour, a paler, slightly brassy yellow, and a greater tendency to dull or discolour over time, particularly in contact with chlorine. People with metal sensitivities are more likely to react to 10K because of the higher base-metal content.
Marks to look for
- 10K, 10KT, 417 with a maker's trademark on US pieces.
- Not gold: 10K GF (gold-filled), 10K RGP (rolled gold plate) and 10K GP or GEP (plated). The gold layer on these is thin and recovers little at melt.
- Class rings often show the manufacturer's name and the karat inside the shank.
How to price a 10K class ring: worked example
Suppose 24K gold is US$133.00 per gram (illustrative). A 10K class ring weighs 15 g, and a buyer offers 80% of melt value.
| Step | Calculation | Amount (US$) |
|---|---|---|
| 10K price per gram | $133.00 × 0.417 | 55.461 |
| Melt value | 15 g × $55.461 | 831.92 |
| Offer at 80% | $831.915 × 0.80 | 665.53 |
| Pure gold contained | 15 g × 0.417 | 6.255 g |
Many class rings contain a synthetic stone, which should be removed or its weight deducted before you calculate. Use the scrap gold calculator to compare offers and weights in any mix of karats.
10K value compared with other karats
Per gram, 10K is worth 71% of 14K (0.417 ÷ 0.585 = 0.713) and 56% of 18K (0.417 ÷ 0.75 = 0.556). That gap matters when you sell a mixed lot: a buyer who quotes one blended price per gram for "gold" is undervaluing the higher karats or overvaluing the 10K. Sort pieces by stamp before weighing, and ask for a separate price for each karat. The karat purity calculator converts any stamp, including unusual ones such as 9K or 375, into a percentage.
Resale considerations
Because the gold share is low, small differences in a buyer's payout percentage and testing have a large effect on 10K. Weigh your pieces yourself on a gram or pennyweight scale before visiting a buyer, and make sure the buyer weighs in front of you. Scales that read in pennyweight can be converted at 1 dwt = 1.55517 g, or use the gold unit converter. Ask whether the quoted figure is per gram of 10K or per gram of pure gold, since the two differ by a factor of 2.4. If a piece has sentimental value, compare the offer with its metal value first: a 10K ring often sells for much less than its original retail price because most of that price was design and labour.
