How Tirupati's rate is set
Tirupati's jewellers buy through wholesalers linked to Chennai and Hyderabad, and the city's board rate usually sits between and very close to those two markets. The underlying cost is national: international gold in rupees plus 6% customs duty, then the dealer's margin. The live table here is the reference without local margins.
In Telugu, gold is bangaram, and many families still think of wedding gold in sovereigns of 8 grams, which is why the table includes an 8-gram row.
A temple town's gold market
The Sri Venkateswara temple at Tirumala, in the hills above the city, is one of the most visited temples in the world, and offerings of gold in the temple hundi are a long-standing devotional practice. That pilgrim traffic shapes Tirupati's market: alongside wedding jewellery, shops sell small gold items, coins and pendants with deity images to visitors from across India. For pilgrims buying a small piece, the key point is that making charges on 1 to 4 gram items are high as a percentage, so compare the total price rather than the per-gram rate.
The main shopping streets in the city centre have both local jewellers and branded chains, and buyers from Chittoor district and nearby parts of Tamil Nadu come to Tirupati for wedding purchases. Pilgrims short on time should still take the same care as a local buyer: insist on a hallmark and a GST invoice, and avoid buying from street vendors who cannot provide either.
When wastage is charged in grams
Many Andhra Pradesh jewellers express wastage as extra grams of gold rather than as a percentage. A necklace weighing 24 g might be billed as if it contained 26.4 g, the extra 2.4 g (10%) representing wastage. Some add a per-gram making charge as well. Suppose (illustrative) the 22K rate is ₹12,260 per gram, with 2.4 g wastage and ₹150 per gram making on the actual 24 g:
| Item | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Gold incl. wastage | (24 g + 2.4 g) × ₹12,260 | ₹3,23,664 |
| Making | 24 g × ₹150 | ₹3,600 |
| Subtotal | ₹3,27,264 | |
| GST | 3% of ₹3,27,264 | ₹9,817.92 |
| Total | ₹3,37,081.92 |
The important detail: when you later sell or exchange the necklace, you are paid for 24 g, not 26.4 g. The wastage grams are a charge, not gold you own. Make sure the invoice shows the actual net weight separately from the wastage. You can model this in the jewellery price calculator by converting wastage to a percentage (here 10%).
Telugu wedding gold
The mangalasutram with its two gold discs (pustelu), the vaddanam (waist belt), long haram necklaces, kasula peru (coin necklace) and bangles make up a typical Telugu bridal set, nearly all in 22K. Temple-style designs, with deity motifs and Lakshmi coins, are especially popular in the Tirupati region. Ugadi, Sankranti, Akshaya Tritiya, Dasara and Deepavali are the main buying occasions, along with the auspicious wedding months.
